LANSING – A new state trade office in Toronto was officially opened on Monday with Governor Rick Snyder attending a grand opening for the state office designed to boost both business and Michigan tourism with Canada.
The event was part of a series of appearances and meetings Snyder had scheduled in Toronto to help promote trade, especially with the expected onset of a new international bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
Among the events Snyder appeared at was the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships where he delivered the keynote address. He also met with Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.
At the trade office opening, Snyder said the office would build on a “strong foundation” Michigan has already with Canada.
The office would also “add to the level of service we can offer our businesses, strengthen our relationship on many fronts and expand mutually beneficial opportunities for our businesses and our citizens.”
Coincident with Snyder’s appearance in Toronto, executives from six Michigan businesses were in Ontario to meet with Canadian businesses about expanding their trade.
While Snyder has been in Canada numerous times since taking office, especially leading up to last June’s agreement on the international bridge, Monday’s visit was officially a trade mission. It is the fourth such mission Snyder has gone on since taking office. He also has taken two missions to Asia and one to Europe.
