LANSING – They just won their party’s respective nominations, but Republican Rick Snyder has more support among likely voters than Democrat Virg Bernero, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll.
The survey of 500 likely voters contacted the day after the primary showed Snyder with 49 percent support to Bernero’s 37 percent. Another 3 percent of respondents favored a third candidate, while 11 percent are undecided.
The poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 4.5 percent. In a June poll of potential match-ups, Snyder led 42 to 30 percent over Bernero.
Rasmussen found that 86 percent of Republicans support Snyder, while 79 percent of Democrats back Bernero. Independent voters favored Snyder more than three-to-one.
A majority of respondents, 60 percent, rated Michigan’s economy as poor. While 28 percent think the economy is getting better, 42 percent said it’s getting worse.
But 66 percent of people who think the economy is improving prefer Bernero. Snyder is the preferred candidate of 59 percent of people who think the economy is worse off.
