LANSING – Governor Rick Snyder announced Tuesday that he has named Jarrod Agen, a veteran of communications shops in both the government and elections, as his new communications director.

Agen comes to Snyder from Empowered-U in California, where he was vice president for marketing and communications. The co-founder of Empowered, Steve Poizner, had hired Agen as communications director during his unsuccessful bid for the California Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2010. Later in 2010, Agen handled communications for Sharron Angle, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Nevada.

In 2008, Agen was the spokesperson for New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s presidential campaign.

He also has held communications jobs at the U.S. departments of Homeland Security and State, as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“We are pleased to welcome Jarrod Agen to our team,” Snyder said in a statement. “He is accustomed to fast-paced environments and the challenges of telling big stories to audiences large and small. Michigan’s comeback is an exciting story, and we welcome his leadership on our team to help tell that story.”

Agen succeeds Jeff Holyfield, who moved to the communications post at the Bureau of the Lottery.

Press Secretary Sara Wurfel and Deputy Press Secretary Dave Murray will continue to speak on behalf of the administration to the news media.
