LANSING – The 175th anniversary of Michigan’s admission to the union was Thursday, and in proclaiming statehood day Governor Rick Snyder said the state’s greatest days are to come.
Michigan has a great past, Snyder said, but “the innovative spirit that built this state will take us to new heights in the 21st century and beyond.”
Michigan and Arkansas were admitted to the union at the same time in 1837 as politics at the time required that free and slave states be admitted at the same time.
Snyder, a native of Battle Creek, and multiple degree earner from The University of Michigan, encouraged state residents to attend state day activities at the state historical museum.
“It’s an honor to be a Michigander and as we celebrate this Michigan milestone I encourage every resident to take a moment to reflect on the beauty, greatness and promise of our state,” Snyder said.
