LANSING – Governor Rick Snyder made clear Tuesday he has no interest in following the path of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who has ignited a firestorm in his state with his effort to cripple public employee unions.
Speaking to the Michigan Building Trades and Construction Council, Snyder got a warm reception when he discussed his support for projects like the Detroit River International Crossing. The group was quieter when he asked for its support on his budget and tax plans.
But Snyder got the most positive reaction when he chided what was happening in other states, like Wisconsin.
“This is not Wisconsin,” he said to big applause. “There’s models out there both at the national level and in other states. They are ones of fighting and conflict. … Our focus is not on finding areas to fight, but finding that common ground where we can win together and solve problems together. We are here to stand together.”
Snyder was introduced by Patrick Devlin, secretary-treasurer of the union, with praise for Snyder’s statements that he wants to work through the collective bargaining process and dismissal of bills that would make Michigan a right-to-work state as well as repeal the prevailing wage law.
