LANSING – Toyota Motors announced Monday that it was expanding its Ann Arbor technology campus, adding some 250 jobs in the area as the giant automaker announced a massive consolidation of its U.S. operations.
The company announced it was consolidating its U.S. headquarters into Plano, Texas.
The expansion in Ann Arbor will relocate its direct procurement operation from Erlanger, Kentucky.
The Ann Arbor site is one of the few Toyota operates in the U.S. that will not see some contractions as the company begins construction of the new headquarters. In total, some 4,000 employees will be moved by the various shifts.
Toyota now has about 1,100 workers at its Ann Arbor campus.
In a statement, Governor Rick Snyder said the decision to expand Toyota’s operations in the state shows that “Michigan has world class talent.”
The expansion shows how the state can combine a business-friendly environment with expert employment and help the auto industry, along with other industries, grow, Snyder said.
“I appreciate that Toyota has confidence in Michigan and its talented, hardworking residents,” Snyder said.
