LANSING – Governor Rick Snyder signed five bills Wednesday designed to allow military veterans to allow their experience in the armed forces to qualify them for similar civilian jobs.

Snyder signed legislation enabling:

Veterans who specialized in military health care to obtain an emergency medical technician or related license, with fees waived for those honorably discharged (HB 4605 , PA 165);

Waiver of firefighter examination requirements for someone who completed firefighter training that met state standards while serving in the military (HB 4731 , PA 166);

Use of relevant military experience as the basis for registering as a stationary steam engineer or boiler operator (HB 4752 , PA 167);

Use of relevant military experience as the basis for licensing as a mechanical contractor (HB 4754 , PA 168); and

Substitution of military experience for up to 60 hours of education requirements toward a residential builders or residential maintenance and alteration contractor license (HB 4756 , PA 169).

“This is good for our veterans and it is good for Michigan,” Mr. Snyder said in a statement. “Our veterans possess leadership skills and a work ethic that has been tested at an early age and under extreme circumstances. We need to create a clear path for our veterans to use these skills in Michigan’s workforce and help our state’s continued comeback.”

All five bills take effect February 12, 2014.
