LANSING – The state does have a role in regulating business, but rules on ergonomics standards would overstep that role, Governor Rick Snyder said upon signing legislation that would ban the rules.
The rules, which would have required businesses to implement ergonomics standards to prevent motion-related injuries, have been under development for several years, but would be permanently put on hold under SB 20 (PA 10).
Instead, the measure allows the state to disseminate recommendations on best practices.
“I believe the private sector does a very good job of looking at their employee base and how to do the right thing,” Snyder said.
Sen. Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge) said the measure shows the difference between the current administration and the prior one in terms of attitudes toward job growth.
“This was my first veto back in 2006,” he said of the legislation to ban the rules.
