LANSING – Universities should not be required to report to the Legislature on their embryonic stem cell research, Governor Rick Snyder said at an event Monday.

Both legislative chambers have so far supported the language, but Snyder indicated he thought it would at least violate voters’ intent in allowing the research.

“We need to focus on higher education and not stem cells,” he said.

The language could make it to the governor’s desk, though.

Sen. Roger Kahn (R-Saginaw Township), chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, noted the amendment was attached to the budget by a unanimous Republican vote in his committee.

“We discussed the governor’s likely opposition to this issue, and we respectfully disagree with the governor,” he said.
