LANSING – The other state universities have now benefited from the funds Wayne State University officials forfeited in June when they approved an 8.9 percent tuition increase.
The WSU Board of Governors had acknowledged when it approved the increase that $534,700 in performance funding would be lost. Because WSU was the only school to break the 3.75 percent tuition increase cap in the current fiscal year budget, all 14 other state universities shared in those lost funds.
As would be expected, the University of Michigan and Michigan State University saw the largest portion of the lost WSU funds: $124,000 and $111,500 respectively. Those institutions also had the largest overall state appropriation and the largest performance bonuses.
Budget Director John Nixon had officially informed WSU officials they would lose the performance funds in a September 10 letter that was first publicized over the weekend.
