ANN ARBOR – Kai Yang, professor in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Wayne State University, will discuss important success factors for industrial engineering to effectively improve the healthcare industry’s performance Nov. 7 at Cleary University.

The American healthcare industry is facing challenges because of increasing healthcare cost, dissatisfaction with healthcare quality, and low efficiency. In a 2005 report, the National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine of the National Academies show that the healthcare sector has been slow to adopt and apply industrial engineering tools and practices, which could counterbalance these challenges. It has been estimated that 50% of $2.5 trillion healthcare spending can be classified as waste.

In this presentation, Yang will discuss the important success factors for industrial engineering to effectively improve healthcare industry?s performance, and he will share his research team?s successful stories. Recently, his team won a grant to establish one of the four Veteran Engineering Resource Centers (VERC), which will be showcases for integrating industrial engineering methods and tools into healthcare delivery. These four centers are funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs and Siemens. The talk will include:

How industrial engineering can help the healthcare industry

Overview of the projects funded by the VA

Detailed description of several VERC Projects

Yang has Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the East China Petroleum Institute. His research areas include quality engineering, engineering design and design methodologies, reliability engineering, and Lean healthcare. He is currently a leading faculty member in the US Veteran Administration (VA) Center for Applied System Engineering, which is a nationwide VA initiative to use industrial engineering to improve the healthcare industry.

The meeting will be held at the Cleary University Ann Arbor campus, 3601 Plymouth Road just west of US-23, Monday November 7, 5:30-7:30pm. The presentation begins at 6:00, with dinner and networking beginning at 5:30.
