DETROIT – There’s a new co-working space in one of Detroit?s oldest entrepreneurial spaces at TechTown on the edge of the Wayne State University campus.
It?s called Junction440 since the address is 440 Burroughs.
TechTown recently spent $1.5 million to renovate the 20,000 square-foot first floor, nearly half of which will be dedicated to co-working. The money came from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The rest of the space features TechTown?s public event facilities, and acceleration, incubation and administrative suites.
?We?re adding to the district, creating new opportunities for TechTown,? said Leslie Smith, President and CEO. ?Co-working is another flexible way to get folks engaged in our programs. Whether they are mentors, facilitators or client companies, co-working allows you more flexible terms to access our space. You can rent it hourly, by the day, by the month.?
Prices range from $20 a day to $375 a month with a dedicated desk. Smith said the co-working space had a soft launch for the past month to work the bugs out.
?We only opened Tuesday,? she said. ?Now we?re inviting everyone on Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. to our open house, as part of ColabDetroit.Com a one-week event to introduce entrepreneurs to seven Detroit co-working spaces.?
Other Co-Lab Detroit participants include Bamboo Detroit, An Office in Detroit, Bizdom, Practice Space, Grand Circus, Co-Lab Detroit, and OmnicorpDetroit.
?We?re calling it co-working week,? said Isaac Gilman, Project Manager at TechTown. ?These organizations have been meeting over the past few months trying to figure out how we can collaborate to make co-working and entrepreneurship better in the city. Each of us have our own day or evening where we teach classes or host an open house.?
