GRAND RAPIDS ? Van Andel Institute will present the annual Daniel Nathans Award on Sept. 13 to Harald zur Hausen and Douglas Lowy, two VAI researchers.

Zur Hausen?s laboratory helped identify infection by human papillomavirus as the main cause of cervical cancer. Lowy?s studies helped lead to the development of a novel way to prepare highly successful vaccines that prevent infection by these viruses.

The award honors the late Daniel Nathans, PhD, a founding member of Van Andel Research Institute?s Board of Scientific Advisors. The award ceremony includes a guest lecture by each recipient.

The wine and cheese reception is scheduled from 5 to 6 pm, the awards will be presented from 6 to 6:10 pm, and the Daniel Nathans Award lecture will be from 6:10 to 8 pm.
