ANN ARBOR – The University of Michigan is ranked No. 20 in the world, according to the World University Rankings 2012-2013. U-M was ranked No. 18 in the 2011 survey.

The annual list ranks the top 400 universities and is based on 13 performance indicators separated into five categories: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

The Times Higher Education Rankings are compiled in partnership with Thomson Reuters.

Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education Rankings, noted it has been a tough year for many Western institutions in the world rankings as competitors across Asia benefit from substantial funding and focused political commitment to building world-class universities.

“For any U.S. institution, just standing still is a real challenge,” he said. ?The top 200 list represents just 1 percent of the world’s higher education institutions ? so being towards the very top of that group is an exceptional achievement.”

The ranking is one of two released annually by Times Higher Education. Earlier this year, U-M was ranked 12th in the organization’s annual Reputation Rankings, which are based on results from an invitation-only survey of scholars from around the world.
