DETROIT – A coalition of unions will undertake a petition drive to place a proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot protecting the right to collectively bargain and banning the state from enacting a right-to-work law.
The Detroit News reported Thursday evening that UAW President Bob King, addressing members in Washington, informed them that a coalition of union presidents had agreed at a Wednesday meeting to pursue the effort and seek the petition signatures of 500,000 registered voters.
The drive could begin as soon as next week, the News reported.
Several Republicans in the Legislature are itching to pass a bill that would ban mandatory union membership and dues for employees of companies that have collective bargaining agreements with their workers. Under a right-to-work law, workers opting out of the union would still receive the same pay, benefits and representation as union members even though they don’t pay dues.
