GRAND RAPIDS ? Van Andel Institute has brought some world renowned scientists to West Michigan to honor the lifetime achievements of VAI Research Director George Vande Woude and this year?s Daniel Nathans Memorial Award co-recipients.
More than 250 scientists from around the world are attending the Van Andel Institute?s 2006 scientific symposium, Winning the War Against Cancer: From Genomics to Bedside and Back.
The three-day program features presentations by more than 25 prominent scientists, including three Nobel Laureates, who have shaped the fields of cancer and molecular genetics.
The event honors the lifetime achievements of Vande Woude, and this year?s Daniel Nathans Memorial Award co-recipients Tony Hunter, Ph.D., of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Tony Pawson, Ph.D., of Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto.
This notable group of researchers will join VARI scientific staff for in-depth discussions centering on the molecular and genetic origins of cancers and applications for prevention and treatment of the disease.
The Van Andel Institute is an independent research organization dedicated to preserving, enhancing and expanding the frontiers of medical science, and to achieving excellence in education by probing fundamental issues of education and the learning process. Established by the Jay and Betty Van Andel Foundation, its goals include identifying new cancer genes and their proteins, developing new methods for detecting cancer before it becomes life threatening, and identifying new biological targets for therapeutic intervention.
