GRAND RAPIDS – Senior Scientific Investigator Bart Williams, Ph.D., head of Van Andel Institute’s Laboratory of Cell Signaling and Carcinogenesis, was named in September to a post on the National Institute of Heath Study section.

Williams will serve as a member of the Skeletal Biology Development and Disease Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, for a term ending in June 2012.

“This appointment is exciting and my standing in the field is a reflection of the hard work and effort of numerous individuals that work in and with my laboratory at VAI. It provides me with the opportunity to interact with some of the national leaders in skeletal biology research and also increases the profile of VAI on a national level,” said Williams.

According to Toni Scarpa, M.D., Ph.D., NIH Director, Center for Scientific Review, membership on a study section represents a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort. Study sections review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on these applications to NIH national advisory councils and boards, and survey the status of research in their fields of science. Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.

“This is a remarkable achievement and reflects the high recognition Dr. Williams is receiving from the research community in which he participates,” said VAI Research Director George Vande Woude, Ph.D.
