DETROIT – The Michigan Council for Women in Technology will co-host on March 19 its Girls are IT event, a one-day forum providing hands-on experience to encourage students to pursue technology careers.
The event, a collaboration among the University of Michigan-Dearborn, University of Detroit Mercy, and Lawrence Technological University, will draw more than 300 girls in grades 4 through 12.
MCWT is also at the halfway point for its 2013 ? 2014 Mentor Program. The program consists of professionals devoting extra time to focus on career development through formal programs and collaboration with an assigned mentor. The class of mentees recently received an assignment to ?pay it forward? and give their time for a worthy cause.
Most of the volunteer assignments have the mentees working with local colleges or the MCWT University Committee on a special project that will deal with women in technology. The goal is to have them share a volunteer experience in addition to the variety of other seminars, speakers, and activities they do weekly throughout the year-long program. This element was added to the mentor program because MCWT contends giving back to the community is an important attribute for a well-rounded leader.
These are just a few of the programs MCWT offers to Women in Technology. From replicating GET-IT clubs at the middle school level to expanding Camp Infinity summer technology camp, to more locations, the Michigan Council for Women in Technology Foundation will be busy reaching more girls, their parents, teachers, and influencers to help Michigan become the No. 1 state for women in IT in 2014.
Plus, annual fundraisers and member events will continue to bring IT thought leaders together to learn from each other in support of the MCWT mission. Additional programs for members in 2014 will include an In-Transition Boot Camp, Executive Technology Leadership event, and the ConnectNet suite of webinars, social events, and educational forums.
