LANSING – Customers who used Unemployment Insurance Agency debit cards at Home Depot between April 2014 and August 2014 could potentially be impacted by the store’s recent announcement that its payment data systems were breached, the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs said Tuesday.

Some unemployment insurance claimants receive their benefits via debit cards issued by Bank of America. Cardholders are encouraged to monitor their accounts and report any unusual activity to the issuing bank, LARA said. It is estimated that 300 to 500 UIA debit card holders could have been impacted by the Home Depot incident.

“The UIA is concerned about this incident,” Sharon Moffett-Massey, director of the agency, said in a statement. “We’re encouraging our customers who may have been affected to monitor their debit card accounts closely and visit the Home Depot website for more information.”

Earlier this month, Home Depot confirmed the breach but has since announced that its customers would not be held accountable for any fraudulent charges to their accounts.
