DETROIT – If you spend any time reading tech blogs and news sites, you’ve probably heard this a thousand times: You have to know how to code to be successful in tech.
You read these stories and they’re all like, “So-and-so built [INSERT MASSIVE TECH COMPANY HERE] in their garage” or “So-and-so coded [CRAZY BIG SOCIAL NETWORK] in his college dorm room.” And if you’re a non-technical person (like me), it’s easy to feel left out.
A few years ago, I bought into all that. I thought there was NO WAY I could launch a startup without knowing how to code. At the same time, I can’t tell you how often I would catch myself saying, “There should be an app for THAT. If I could build an app like that, I could make it BIG.” And then that stupid voice in the back of my head would say, “Don’t be silly, Tara. You’re not a technical person. You can’t build that.”
