BIRMINGHAM – As summer is drawing to an end many IT security professionals are returning to their desks after vacations and trips to drop freshmen off at their new schools. A quick check of emails, Twitter, Facebook, and news sites will reveal that insecurity never sleeps nor vacations.

A quick recap:

Celebrity Photo Leaks. There is an FBI cyber manhunt on for the purported ?hackers? who released risqu selfies of over 100 models and movie stars on Sunday. A special subreddit was created just to track the leaks as they came out. It garnered 130,000 subscribers in three days. Security blogger Graham Cluley has the best round up of likely scenarios that explain the leaks.

One scenario that Cluley does not consider is that this was more of a peer pressure flood than a specific targeted attack on Apple?s iCloud service. There is evidence that there is an underground of creepers who collect and trade celebrity nudes. One such leaked some pics and everyone else piled on. This theory fits the multiple leak sources and the age of the stolen pics.
