DETROIT – Every day we see great things happening in our state and our local communities. New job announcements, investments to grow talent, and community projects that will improve the quality of life. Michigan’s not alone in making these investments though, as states around the country invest their own record budget surpluses for future prosperity. If we want our state to compete and win, the time to make bold changes is now.

Today, Michigan’s economy is average, coming in at 29th. That’s a big improvement from where we found ourselves after the Great Recession, but data suggests that we’ll struggle to maintain that position in coming years without change. Top 10 states are powerhouses in education/talent and job creation, with investments and strategies that support higher incomes and healthy economies. Business Leaders for Michigan’s new Compete to Win plan offers recommendations and a path for Michigan to do the same.

To reach the top, we must do better by our kids, invest in people, accelerate our economy, and get the fundamentals right. Keep reading this newsletter to learn more.

While there is much work to be done, we have a lot to be optimistic about. We hope you join us in helping our state reach its full potential.
