MichBio Holds Inaugural Event For Women In BioScience

ANN ARBOR – More than 100 women heard inspirational messages

about careers in BioSciences June 9 at the inaugural Women in BioScience

program hosted by MichBio, the state’s life sciences trade association.

Inspiration came from both the personal and professional

experiences of dozens of women who volunteered their time to inspire other women

to further their careers in BioSciences. Panel topics included positioning

yourself in today’s marketplace, life as a woman entrepreneur, and lessons in

leadership. Luann Pendy, PhD, from Medtronic delivered the keynote.

The half-day program informed the women in attendance about

the growing career opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math,

as well as how they could refine their career paths to match hot trends in

BioSciences.

The keynote was the last and most moving presentation of the

day from Pendy. She discussed her vital role at Medtronic, where she oversees

all global quality operations. Pendy joined the company in 2008 as vice

president of corporate quality before moving up the ladder to her current post.

She shared her many experiences over the past seven years at this growing BioSciences

company.

Pendy has Michigan ties. She received her Bachelor of

Science degree from the University of Michigan and her Doctorate of Philosophy

in Immunology from Rush University in Chicago.

Opportunities in the field of BioSciences are vast for women

and only continue to grow as technology and science merge to improve the

quality of life for all people. It is the work of organizations like MichBio

and events like this one can help bring more women into this field, and create

a more diverse workplace.
