LANSING – Seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates fell in 16 of the state’s 17 major labor market areas in October.

“October changes in the state’s various local labor markets were typically small and seasonal,” said Jason Palmer, director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives. “Michigan’s metropolitan area payroll job levels continued to trend upward in most regions both over the month and over the year.”

The largest decrease in unemployment since September occurred in the Ann Arbor and Monroe metropolitan statistical areas, which both fell by 0.5 percentage point. The rate in the Northeast Lower Michigan region was unchanged.

The state saw payroll jobs rise in local government education (10,000) and state government education (9,000) as students returned to K-12 schools, community college and universities.

For the month, Livingston County had the lowest unemployment rate at 3 percent and Montmorency County had the highest rate at 8.3 percent.
