LANSING – Michigan ranks 12th among the states overall for its business tax climate, the Tax Foundation said in a report released Wednesday.
The state ranked well for its business and individual income taxes, eighth and 14th respectively, but the group raised concerns about the unemployment insurance tax, putting Michigan 48th.
Property tax was also a weakness in the ranking, for data collected as of July 1, 2017, where Michigan ranked 21st.
Wyoming ranked first for overall climate, followed by South Dakota, Alaska, Florida and Nevada. The worst climates were New Jersey, New York, California, Vermont and Minnesota.
For tax collections per capita in fiscal year 2015-16, the most recent data available, Michigan was 23rd at $2,762. Vermont had the most at $4,950 and Alaska the least at $1,405.
