LANSING – While it is always tough
for teens to find summer work, a forecast released Wednesday by the Department
of Technology, Management and Budget said 2015 should be the best summer season
in a decade for young people to find jobs.
The department said it anticipates a
teen unemployment rate of 17.2 percent during the summer. While that is well
more than twice the unemployment rate for the entire state, it is the lowest
projected rate since 2005 when the teen unemployment rate stood at 17.9
percent.
In 2014, the unemployment rate for
teens was 20.2 percent, and that was down from 27.1 percent in 2013.
The highest teen jobless rate in the
last 10 years occurred in 2011 when it hit 35 percent.
The state estimates that 253,000
teens will look for work June to August, and 210,000 will be able to find
employment.
