LANSING ? Michigan House Tax Policy Chairman Fulton Sheen said last week that a new tax plan for Michigan businesses should be passed by the end of this month.
Speaker Craig DeRoche promised the House would vote for a new tax proposal by Labor Day. He succeeded on delivering on his promise. The plan now sits in the Senate.
Last week Gov. Granholm and leaders from both the House and Senate announced a budget agreement and since that time the legislature has been working to resolve minor differences and details.
The tax plan passed by the House called for $1 billion in tax cuts. Some members of the Senate favor tax cuts but the debate is beginning to circulate as to whether the state can afford the proposed $1 billion cut. ?Right now, basically we?re all still meeting,? Sheen told the Small Business Association of Michigan. ?We sat down. We?re trying to get the Senate and the House all on the same page.?
