LANSING – The Small Business Association of Michigan has sent out thousands of emails to its member urging them to pressure Gov. Jennifer Granholm into signing two bills aimed at small business. One would lower the Single Business Tax rate and the other prohibit the state from imposing any new workplace ergonomic rules.
“Small business owners know the only way to create economic growth in Michigan is to have tax reform and fewer regulations,” the email read. “It has been rumored Gov. Granholm may veto these bills so it is imperative for her to hear the voice of small business.”
Senate Bill 957 would lower the Single Business Tax’s small business alternative rate from 2 percent to 1 percent and adjust the owner’s compensation to $125,000 to qualify. Under current law a business owner needs to have revenues under $10 million and a salary of $115,000 or less to qualify for the alternate tax. This legislation would expand it to and give relief to 35,000 small business owners in Michigan.
House Bill 5447 would prohibit the Department of Labor and Economic Growth from imposing any new workplace ergonomic rules for general business. Currently a committee has taken over two years to draft new onerous rules that would cost small businesses millions of dollars in fines and regulatory costs. HB 5447 would prevent the department from instigating these new rules.
