GRAND RAPIDS ? Four Michigan universities have received the 2013 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. The national honor recognizes U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The four include:

Davenport University

Michigan Technological University

Saginaw Valley State University

Western Michigan University

This is the second year Davenport has been named as a HEED Award recipient.

?Davenport is extremely honored to be a recipient of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award again this year,? said Dr. Rhae-Ann Booker, Executive Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Davenport University. ?We work hard to ensure Davenport University is a community where similarities and differences are respected and celebrated and multiple perspectives and diversity of thought are embraced.?

Michigan Tech, in a press release, said the upper peninsula university is actively working to increase the number of highly qualified women students who enroll. Historically, women have been underrepresented, but dramatic strides have been made especially in the College of Engineering, which reflected an all-time high of 906 women this semester. Fall 2013 overall enrollment numbers indicate that females now represent 26 percent of the entire student body. The University?s goal is to increase the number of women students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to 35 percent by 2020.
