NOVI – KEMET Corporation, which makes capacitors for use in the auto industry, is opening a regional sales and engineering office in Novi to provide engineering and customer-service support for KEMET’s growing list of automotive customers in North America.

?The industry is placing more and more emphasis on the development of electric and hybrid-electric vehicle systems,? said Dr. Daniel F. Persico, KEMET?s vice president — Strategic Marketing and Business Development. ?We want to maximize our ability to provide collaborative engineering support for our customers as they work on these highly complex systems.?

KEMET last year signed a $31.7-million contract with the U.S. Department of Energy?s National Energy Technology Laboratory to develop technology for electric-drive and other alternative-energy products.

The auto industry accounted for nearly 16 percent of the company?s revenue during fiscal 2011. KEMET?s customers include many of the world?s major automotive suppliers, including Bosch, Continental, Delphi, Lear, Magneti Marelli, TRW and Visteon.

The company also is major supplier of capacitors for use in consumer electronics, the telecom industry and other high-tech industries. Headquartered in Simpsonville, S.C., the company has approximately 11,000 employees at facilities in North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.
