SOUTHFIELD – The Engineering Society of Detroit’s will honor 40 of Michigan’s best engineers and scientists for their achievements and contributions to their fields Feb. 27 at the Rock Financial Showplace.

This year?s recipient of the Gold Award, the most prestigious award given to an engineer, is Mumtaz Usmen, Professor of Civil Engineering & Associate Dean of Research at Wayne State University. Usmen?s list of accomplishments is long and includes serving on the Executive Committee of the Michigan Transportation Board, as member of the MDOT Action Team on Research and Evaluation and the Michigan Transportation Summit Planning Committee.

Other nominees hail from a broad range of positions and backgrounds, representing such industries as automotive, academic, aviation.

The event will also feature a tribute to this year?s Michigan Regional Future City Competition Teachers of the Year and Mentors of the Year.

?Engineering has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for all people,? said James L. Newman, CEM, CSDP, LEED AP, Chair of ESD?s Affiliate Council. ?The (ESD) Gold Awards Banquet honors those who have contributed so much to life?s quality for so many.?

The Gold Award Banquet will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with the Order of the Engineer Ceremony where several engineers will receive their engineer?s ring and pledge their commitment to the profession. This will be followed at 6:00 p.m. with a cocktail reception and dinner. Presentation of the awards will start at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets to this event are $49 per person or $450 for a table of 10.
