DETROIT – Focus: HOPE is offering a free basic computer training class that provides graduates with the opportunity to purchase a low-cost computer. The class offers 12 hours of training over a two-week period, providing students with basic knowledge of computer operations, word processing, and how to access internet resources.

Students who complete the classes are eligible to purchase a laptop or desktop computer at a low cost and receive assistance in accessing affordable wireless or cable internet connections.

The class is especially helpful for those that are seeking jobs now that many organizations require applicants submit their resumes and applications online.

New classes start regularly. To sign up for an orientation session, call 313.494.4368. Classes are held at 1360 Oakman Boulevard, Detroit 48238.

The classes are offered as part of the Connect Your Community program which resulted in nearly 6,000 Detroit residents in the last two years becoming Sustainable Broadband Adopters — people who know how to use computers and have internet access. The training was funded through a federal broadband grant and classes were offered by three organizations in Detroit, with Focus: HOPE as the lead.

Although the federal funding has expired, Focus: HOPE continues to offer the classes and is covering the costs by refurbishing late model computers and laptops.
