LANSING – Allan Gilmour, once the top financial executive at Ford Motor Company, was named the interim president of Wayne State University by a unanimous vote of the school’s Board of Governors.

Gilmour succeeds Jay Noren, who resigned as president to be with his wife who is recovering from cancer. Gilmour has said he does not want the post permanently.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm was suggested as a possible candidate for the post last week, but her office said she was not interested.

Gilmour said his goal will be to help provide continuity to Michigan’s third-largest university while school officials now look for a permanent president.

The former vice chair and chief financial officer at Ford, Gilmour retired from the automaker in 1995, then rejoined the firm in 2002 before retiring permanently in 2005.
