GRAND RAPIDS – Grand Rapids Community College announced Thursday they are now offering a 50 percent scholarship for a six-month membership program to the Geek Group to all GRCC students who are enrolled in a workforce development program.

As members of the Geek Group, students will have access to a state-of-the-art machine shop, wood shop, electronics lab, rapid prototyping lab, vehicular sciences lab, computer lab, high voltage lab, and a robotics lab.

?The Geek Group is a growing resource for students and other locals who are interested in developing specialized skills. It?s really an amazing place for people who want to learn to develop a skilled trade. Our facilities have the machinery and equipment students need to gain hands-on experience,? said Josh Spencer, Director of Development with the Geek Group. ?We?re thrilled that GRCC realizes the value in giving their students access to the resources they need to expand their education in a hands-on learning environment.?

GRCC provides a range of degree and certificate programs which develop skilled trades. GRCC?s Workforce Development Department includes the following programs: Automotive Technician, Computer Support Technician, Construction Electrician, Green Construction Remodeling, Introduction to Construction, Machinist/CNC Technician, Residential Construction, and Welding/Fabrication Technician.

?This is an important partnership to benefit our students by providing them unparalleled access to the same equipment, tools, and machinery they use in class, yet with more time and flexibility for them to experiment, test, build, and practice what they are learning in our workforce programs,? said Moss Ingram, GRCC Associate Professor of Computer Technology. ?As a result, this will further enhance their exceptional skills and abilities, which directly translates into tangible value to our local employers who readily hire our graduates.?
