How Films Can Re-Engineer Michigan’s Economy
SOUTHFIELD – From engineers and designers to makeup artists and florists, more jobs will be generated as Hollywood comes to Michigan. What does that mean for the State’s economy and its various industries?
On November 19, The Engineering Society of Detroit will host a special presentation by Bob Brown, co-founder/partner and managing partner of the Michigan-based feature film company, Purple Rose Films, and the driving force behind the Michigan Film Incentive.
In 2003, after producing three feature films in Michigan with partner actor Jeff Daniels, Brown was tired of watching other states take the lead in attracting the film and television business back from Canada. Joining forces with State Representative Bill Huizenga from Zeeland, Brown and Huizenga created a film legislation package to earn Michigan its fair share of this lucrative business.
After five years, Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a comprehensive film incentive package that made Michigan the most aggressive state in the nation.
Brown will share the good, the bad and the ugly of the history of the legislation, the current state of the incentives and how this new creative economy will put all of us back to work.
