LANSING – A major redesign of the Department of Treasury’s website to make it easier to navigate and use for individuals, businesses and tax professionals will begin with the department seeking persons who would be part of focus groups or an individual review of the current site.

On its homepage, the department offers payment — $75 for persons who take part in an in-person focus group later this month in East Lansing and $40 for those who do reviews online – to help set up areas to make the site more navigable for people seeking tax information, rulings and forms. The online reviews will continue in February.

Interested persons are then directed to take an online survey which asks the individual’s online usage and what they may use the site for now.

The state is working with a usability group at Michigan State University and with Carol Righi, a St. Louis-based consultant who works with companies in developing information and insights from customer comments and usage.

The department now has a mass of material dealing with taxes, tax forms, tax interpretations, revenue administrative bulletins, state investments, assessing changes and practices, and other financial issues on its webpage, though much of it takes some sifting to locate.

A spokesperson for the department said officials hope to complete the review and redesign by the end of 2015.
