WASHINGTON – NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate, Aviation Safety Program, has awarded $476,000 to the University of Michigan to develop a damage resilient flight planning and guidance system and adaptive flight controls to make future commercial jetliners safer.

These awards will foster closer collaboration with and facilitate the

exchange of ideas and information among researchers within NASA, industry,

academia and other government agencies to benefit the nation’s aeronautics

community, NASA said in a press release.

NASA conducts cutting-edge research to improve the safety of current

and future aircraft operating in the National Airspace System. The research

will focus on the way vehicles are designed, built, operated and

maintained.

Scientists and engineers in this program develop principles,

concepts, tools, methods and technologies to address four areas: aircraft

aging and durability, integrated intelligent flight deck technologies,

integrated vehicle health management and integrated resilient aircraft

control.
