AUBURN HILLS – Factory automation software developer Plexus Systems announced Thursday it will support Gleaners Community Food Bank in
its employee community service campaign.
Gleaners Community Food Bank, in collaboration with its member
agencies, other area food banks and America’s Second Harvest organizations,
and with broad community backing and support, provides surplus donated and
low-cost food and personal care products to people in need in southeastern
Michigan.
“In these times of increasing need for our services, we are delighted
to have been selected by Plexus employees as the focus for their
fundraising and community service efforts this year,” said W. DeWayne
Wells, Gleaners’ president. “The weak US Dollar is actually contributing to
hunger as farmers are more likely to sell food overseas in this economic
environment so Plexus’ support is truly appreciated.”
Plexus employees will participate in such activities as the Gleaners
Food Fight, Detroit Duck Derby, Oakland Press Food Drive, Double Donation
Days, Women’s Power Breakfast and other events.
Last year’s effort by Plexus employees raised more than $25,000 in
donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In a grassroots effort, each
year Plexus employees research, nominate and vote on a different charity to
support for an entire year.
“As a company of 115 people, we are proud to do something for the
community,” said Taya Johnston, Human Resources Manager for Plexus Systems. “Contributing money to support research that may one day find a cure for this difficult disease is one way we can do the right thing for our
community.”
Johnston knows firsthand what living with CF is like. Her
seven-year-old son, Tyler, was diagnosed as a baby with the disease, so
they have been dealing with the daily care of this illness his entire life.
To raise funds for CFF, Plexus sponsored raffles, charity auctions,
employee events and a golf outing for customers and employees as part of
its PowerPlex conference. Employees also participated in CFF’s Great
Strides Walk-A-Thon and the Tennis Auction Ball, Love Affair.
