LIVONIA – Traveling with technology needs a level of paranoia. It is safe to assume any time the tech is out of your site someone is trying to copy the data from it. From your phone’s contact list to the contents of the hard drive of your laptop. Even the hotel safe and Wifi are not to be trusted. On June 16, ISSA Motor City Chapter will host a presentation that covers different levels of paranoia to safely travel with technology to protect your secrets and try to protect your company.
US Army Physical Security Specialist Steve Grey will examine the use of asymmetric and conventional warfare techniques for combating the physical security threats to data systems. Ancient and modern day examples from previous tragedies and triumphs will help provide an illustration of how to be proactive in the development of defensive strategies to prevent physical incursions into secure data systems.
Grey has served in the US Army Infantry for close to six years. During his career he served in OEF 11-12 and subsequently served as an RTO, Team Leader, and Squad leader. His field of expertise is physical security, which involves finding vulnerabilities both with friendly elements, as well as hostile elements, and discovering a solution to fix threats to the safety of friendly elements and to exploit the vulnerabilities of hostile elements to better the chances of a positive outcome for any operation conducted. This includes evaluating security faults within a business/organization or by role playing as the “bad guys” and thinking outside the box to anticipate their next move.
The other speaker will be Chris Jenks, Director of Information Management Michigan National Guard. Jenks is a Threat Intelligence for a Fortune 500 healthcare company. His day job is to investigate people making threats against the company, looking at the attack points as an external attacker, and correlating logs from multiple devices to get a better view of network communication. He has presented on Linux system hardening, Wireless Intrusion Detection, link analysis in human trafficking, and crime mapping.
He is a graduate student at the University of Maryland University College presuming a Master’s of Science in Cybersecurity, a Master’s certificate in Digital Forensics, and his MBA. In his limited spare time Chris picks locks and plays with software defined radio.
