GRAND RAPIDS – Federal Trade Commission Attorney Christopher Panek is the keynote speaker at the 2nd Annual Grand Rapids Cyber Security Conference October 21 at Grand Valley State University. Trivalent Group, the Better Business Bureau of Western Michigan, and the West Michigan Cyber Security Consortium are hosting the conference.

Attorney Panek, who will speak on “Having a Plan to Prepare for, Avoid and Respond to Breaches and Intrusions,” won a judgement against an Orlando-based telemarketer using the ”Rachel from Card Services,” scam to defraud customers.

A dozen speakers are featured on the roster of topics including, Barb Hiemstra, Kent County Information Security Director, who will speak on the efforts to Develop a Cyber Security plan for the region with West Michigan Cyber Security Consortium .

Dan Post of Varonis, tells how Target lost 40 million customer records in an insider breach in 2014. His topic: “Six tactics for preventing insider threats.”

John Hey, Chief Operating Officer of the Trivalent Group, will speak about helping companies learn how Business Continuity Planning can protect digital information assets and prevent technology downtime.

Jennifer Puplava, Partner and attorney at Mika Meyers, PLC, will speak on legal considerations for cyber security compliance. Varnum attorney Jill Miller will speak on the shift to secure chip technology for credit card payments.
