ROYAL OAK – It’s been well documented that there is a lack of diversity in the Information Technology workforce In Southeast Michigan. Far more men than women work as IT professionals. Melissa Sheldon, Senior Research Analyst with the Workforce Intelligence Network of Southeast Michigan, and Erika Carlson from Detroit Labs, examine this issue in this edition of M2 TechCast.
Together they answer the questions:
- Looking at the IT industry in southeast Michigan, what share of the industry is women in IT and tech occupations?
- What about in metro Detroit specifically?
- What is behind the lack of diversity in tech?
- Occupations in IT are on the rise in Michigan and there is increasingly more recruiting happening in IT. How is this growth opportunity particularly going to impact women?
- How do we (we being the industry and partners) educate women about the IT jobs that do exist, and how do we educate women about these career paths early on so they are encouraged to pursue these jobs?
- What is being done to further diversify the industry & who is doing it?
