FLINT TOWNSHIP – The Baker College Bachelor of Science degree program in mechanical engineering offered at the Flint campus has been granted reaccreditation by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The program has been accredited since 2002.

ABET accredits post-secondary programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

“ABET accreditation demonstrates a program’s commitment to providing its students with the highest quality education,” said Wen Hemingway, MBA, CTP, Baker College of Flint president. “This reaccreditation is testament to the dedication of our engineering professionals — who continuously improve Baker College curriculum – and our staff and students, and to the leadership of College of Engineering Dean Dr. Anca Sala.”

A key element of reaccreditation is the requirement that programs continuously improve the education provided. As part of this requirement, measurable goals are set for students and graduates; assessments of success in reaching those goals are designed, conducted and evaluated; and future program decisions are made based on the results.

Accreditation is a voluntary, peer-review process that requires programs to undergo comprehensive, periodic evaluations typically lasting 18 months. The evaluations are conducted by teams of volunteer professionals working in industry, government, higher education and private practice within the ABET disciplines. They focus on eight criteria: students, program educational objectives, student outcomes, continuous improvement, curriculum, faculty, facilities and institutional support.

In addition to providing a structured mechanism for colleges and universities to improve their programs, ABET accreditation helps students and their parents choose quality programs, enables employers and graduate schools to recruit graduates they know are well prepared, and is used by registration, licensure and certification boards to screen applicants.

Baker College’s Jackson campus is in the process of gaining accreditation for its new mechanical engineering Bachelor of Science degree program.
