DETROIT – If you’re interested in mastering your Facebook marketing skills, Grand Circus in Detroit will soon be offering free social media training for up to 3,000 Michigan residents through a first-of-its-kind program sponsored by Facebook. Classes start later this summer.

But you have to apply to get in. Natch. You can do so by clicking on

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, announced the program during a visit Thursday to Grand Circus.

Many details of the program are still being worked out, including the curriculum, training sites and duration of the course. But the focus will be digital skills, starting with social media and marketing, and the courses will be shorter than Grand Circus’ standard 10-week computer coding “boot camp.”

Facebook will also sponsor 25 free seats this fall in a Grand Circus 10-week coding boot camp that will also incorporate Facebook-specific programming.

Normally, seats in a Grand Circus boot camp cost $8,500, although $1,000 scholarships are available for women, people of color and military veterans of any race and gender.
